High ceilings, verandahs, cross-ventilation and elevation are climate engineering, not decoration. A well-oriented Queenslander is comfortable for much of the year with fans alone.
What it costs to own one
Painting, timber repairs, stumps, termite management and, if it has not been done, the cost of legally building in underneath. Budget for ongoing maintenance rather than treating it as a one-off renovation.
The case for new
Insulation, warranty, low maintenance, a garage that fits two cars, and predictable running costs. The trade-offs are smaller blocks, less shade for a decade and a longer commute in most cases.
