Moving to Brisbane from the UK

British families move to Brisbane for the outdoor life, the space and a slower pace than London or the South East: a house with a garden you use all year, school sport in the sunshine, and a city small enough to cross in half an hour.

The move is far bigger than an interstate one. Visas decide your timeline, shipping takes months rather than days, and school enrolment depends on your visa subclass as much as your address. Get those three in order first and the rest follows.

What the move from the UK costs

Sea freight, 20ft container

$9,000 – $16,000

Door to door for a two or three bedroom home. Six to ten weeks on the water plus customs and quarantine. A 40ft container runs roughly $14,000 – $24,000.

Flights for the family

$5,000 – $12,000

One way, family of four, economy. Avoid the UK summer holidays and December when fares peak.

Visa application charges

$5,000 – $20,000+

Varies widely by visa subclass and family size, before migration agent fees. Check current charges with the Department of Home Affairs.

Temporary accommodation

$1,400 – $2,000 a week

Four to eight weeks is common while you inspect and wait for your container. Furnished rentals near the CBD and inner suburbs fill fastest in January.

Bond and rent in advance

6 weeks' rent

Four weeks bond held by the Residential Tenancies Authority, plus two weeks in advance. Agents favour applicants with local references, so bring UK landlord and employer letters.

Car and household setup

$15,000 – $40,000

Most families buy a car on arrival rather than import one. Add appliances (UK plugs and some electricals won't suit), air conditioning servicing, school uniforms and connections.

Exchange rates move the whole budget. Many families transfer money in stages using a specialist currency service rather than a high-street bank. If you're buying, foreign buyer rules and additional duty can apply depending on your visa status, so get advice before you make an offer.

UK places and their Brisbane equivalents

Rough translations, not matches. They line up on feel, housing type and who lives there.

West: Chelmer, Graceville, Indooroopilly

Leafy, established, school-focused and an easy run into the city.

Inner north and east: New Farm, Paddington, Windsor

Walkable streets, cafes, character homes and the river or a train line into town.

Bayside: Manly, Wynnum, Shorncliffe

Water, jetties, a village feel and a slower pace, with calm bay water rather than surf.

Inner east: Camp Hill, Carina, Norman Park

Family streets, good state schools and sensible value close to the city.

North: Bridgeman Downs, Albany Creek; south: Mansfield, Wishart

Bigger blocks, newer homes, family estates and a car-based routine.

Six suburbs to start with

Chelmer

Big trees, big homes and strong school reach: the Surrey commuter belt with a river.

Paddington

Hilly, walkable and full of character homes: the most village-like inner suburb.

New Farm

Dense, walkable and lively, with parks and the river on three sides.

Camp Hill

Family streets, good state schools and value close to the city.

Manly

A marina village by the bay for families after a slower, seaside pace.

Ashgrove

Established family streets with easy access to well-known schools.

Build a shortlist around your own priorities

What to pack, what to sell

Bring it

  • Furniture you love and couldn't easily replace: quality pieces are expensive in Australia.
  • Birth and marriage certificates, school reports, immunisation records and medical history, all in your hand luggage.
  • Driving records and a no-claims letter from your UK insurer: it can lower Australian car insurance.
  • Outdoor gear, bikes and anything for the water.

Leave it behind

  • Most UK electricals: the voltage is similar but plugs differ, and adaptors on everything gets old fast.
  • Heavy winter wardrobes. A Brisbane winter needs a light jacket and a jumper.
  • Anything wooden with bark, soil-covered garden tools, food and plant material: Australian biosecurity is strict and cleaning or fumigation costs add up.
  • Bulky dark furniture and thick carpets that suit a UK terrace but not a Queenslander.

Clean everything that's been outdoors (bikes, garden furniture, shoes, tents) before it's packed. Biosecurity inspections are the most common cause of shipping delays and surprise charges.

Schools: what changes when you cross the border

Whether your children pay fees at a Queensland state school depends on your visa. Permanent residents and some temporary visa holders enrol free; many temporary visa holders pay dependant fees. Check your subclass with Education Queensland International before you budget.

State schools enrol by catchment, tied to where you actually live. An agreement to lease is usually accepted as proof of address, so choose the school before you sign a lease.

Independent and Catholic schools accept students from anywhere, but popular ones have long waiting lists. Register interest from the UK as soon as your move is likely.

Year levels differ: Queensland Prep is roughly Year 1 in England, and the cut-off is 30 June rather than 31 August. Ask the school to confirm placement in writing using your child's date of birth and UK reports.

The school year runs late January to mid-December in four terms, so a mid-year UK move lands partway through the Australian year.

Four things British households consistently get wrong

The sun is serious

UV levels are far higher than in the UK, even in winter. Hats, sunscreen and shaded play are school rules, not suggestions. Summer from December to March is hot, humid and stormy, so check for air conditioning and ceiling fans in any home you consider.

Flood and storm checks are routine

Check any home near the river or a creek on Brisbane City Council's flood awareness map before you apply or offer. It changes insurance costs, sometimes dramatically.

Your credit history doesn't travel

UK credit files don't transfer, so renting, phone contracts and loans can take more paperwork at first. Open an Australian bank account before you arrive if your bank allows it, and bring employer and landlord references.

Everything is further apart, except Brisbane itself

Family back home is a day's travel away, which is the hardest adjustment for many people. Within Brisbane though, most of the inner city is a 25-minute drive, and weekends at the coast are an hour away.

UK to Brisbane checklist

  • Confirm your visa pathway and timeline, ideally with a registered migration agent.
  • Check which school fees apply to your visa subclass.
  • Register interest at any independent schools you're serious about.
  • Get three international removal quotes and compare inclusions and insurance.
  • Book shipping, flights and furnished temporary accommodation.
  • Shortlist three or four Brisbane suburbs and check school catchments.
  • Gather certificates, school reports, medical and immunisation records.
  • Sell or give away what isn't worth shipping.
  • Clean outdoor items for biosecurity and pack hand luggage documents.
  • Notify HMRC, your council, utilities and the DVLA.
  • Arrange pet transport if needed (allow extra months for quarantine rules).
  • Set up an Australian bank account and a currency transfer plan.
  • Apply for a Tax File Number and register with Medicare if eligible.
  • Swap your UK licence for a Queensland one within the allowed period.
  • Enrol the children in person with proof of address and visa documents.
  • Find a GP and dentist before you need one.

How much does it cost to move from the UK to Brisbane?

Before visas, most families spend $30,000 to $70,000 once shipping, flights, temporary accommodation, bond, a car and household setup are counted. Visa charges and migration advice are on top and vary by subclass. Our cost planner helps you build your own figure.

Do UK children go to Brisbane state schools for free?

It depends on your visa. Permanent residents and some temporary visa holders enrol free; many temporary visa holders pay dependant fees. Education Queensland International publishes the current rules by visa subclass.

How long does shipping take from the UK to Brisbane?

Usually ten to fourteen weeks door to door, including six to ten weeks at sea plus customs and biosecurity. Plan on furnished accommodation or air freight for essentials in the meantime.

Which Brisbane suburbs do British families choose?

The western suburbs such as Chelmer, Graceville and Indooroopilly are popular for schools and leafy streets, inner suburbs such as Paddington and New Farm for walkability, and bayside Manly and Wynnum for a seaside pace. Our suburb shortlist tool narrows it to your priorities.
