Sydney to Brisbane removalists: how to read a quote and not overpay

Volume, not weight, sets the price. What changes a quote by a thousand dollars, the red flags that cost a family their furniture, and the eight questions to ask before you book.

What you are actually paying for

Interstate moves are priced on space — the cubic metres your household occupies in a truck — plus the labour and access at both ends. A three-bedroom family home typically fills somewhere in the range of twenty-five to forty cubic metres once furniture is wrapped and boxes are stacked, and the difference between a tidy three-bedroom and a full one can be a whole truck.

Because it is volume, the cheapest thing you can do before getting quotes is a genuine purge. Selling or donating a third of a household often moves a quote down a whole truck size, which is worth more than any discount you will negotiate.

The five things that move a quote

Volume, as above. Then access: stairs without a lift, a narrow lane, a no-parking street, or a truck that cannot reverse to the door all add hours, and hours are the biggest variable in a quote.

Dates. The last week of the month, school-holiday weeks and December carry a premium; mid-month moves in winter are the cheapest of the year. If your start date is flexible, say so in every enquiry.

Inclusions. Packing, unpacking, boxes, bedding-on, palletised boxes for a partial load, storage in transit, and insurance are each priced separately by most companies and often added late.

Distance and the drop-off point. A Sydney metro pickup to Brisbane metro is the standard lane; a coastal or regional end adds both kilometres and a second driver's allowance.

Fixed price versus variable rate

A fixed-price quote locks the total for a stated volume and access conditions, which is what most families should ask for. A variable or day-rate quote can look cheaper on paper and then grow with fuel, waiting time, extra crew and a second trip.

Ask, in writing, what would make the final invoice exceed the quoted figure. A good company lists the triggers plainly — undisclosed volume, access delays, extra floors, items declared at pickup. A bad one says 'it won't change' without qualifying anything.

Whatever you are quoted, treat it as indicative until someone has actually looked at your household, in person or on a video walk-through. A quote produced from a phone conversation alone is a guess.

Red flags worth walking away from

A large cash deposit demanded before any survey, with no company details or a ABN you cannot match to a registered trading name.

No written inventory, no insurance details, and no named contact for the moving day.

A price dramatically below every other quote. Underquoting to win the job, then charging for 'unforeseen' items at the door, is the most common complaint in the industry.

Refusal to confirm which of their own trucks and crews will do the job. Sub-contracting an interstate move to a stranger is where furniture and tempers both get damaged.

The cheaper hybrids that actually work

Many families split the move: drive the car and the essentials up the Pacific Motorway over two or three days, ship a pallet of boxes ahead, and have a removalist take only the large furniture. It is slower and more physical, and it commonly saves several thousand dollars.

Selling the bulky, low-value things is the other big lever. Mattresses, wardrobes, a second sofa and a fifteen-year-old whitegoods set rarely survive a interstate move economically; sell them locally and buy replacements on arrival.

If you are renting, check whether your building has a lift booking, a move-in bond for the lift, or restricted move hours. A truck parked while a lift is unavailable is billed to you, not to them.

Eight questions to ask before you book

Is this a fixed price, and what would change it? What volume have you assumed, and how was it assessed? Who is insured, for how much, and under which policy? What happens if the truck is delayed a day? Is storage included if our new home is not ready? What are your access requirements at each end? Which crew and which truck will do our move? What is your complaints process and who do we call on the day?

Get three written quotes on the same assumed volume, book four to six weeks ahead in peak season, and put every agreement in email. Families who do this have the move; families who do not have a story.
