Moving from Sydney to Brisbane — what actually changes
Housing, commuting, schooling and the pace of the week, compared honestly rather than sold.
The housing swap is the headline
Most Sydney families find their budget buys a substantially bigger house on a bigger block, closer to the city, with a pool. That is the single largest change and the reason most of the moves happen.
The catch is that Brisbane's best family suburbs have narrowed. The days of picking any inner suburb are gone; you still need to move decisively.
Commuting and the shape of the day
Brisbane commutes are shorter but more car-dependent outside the rail and busway corridors. Many households that ran one car in Sydney run two here. School drop-off tends to be driven rather than walked or trained.
The upside is time. A thirty-minute door-to-door commute is normal, and the working day tends to start and finish earlier.
Schools and social settling
Independent school fees are meaningfully lower than Sydney equivalents, and the state high schools in the inner west and north are strong. Waitlists are the constraint, not price.
Socially, expect a smaller city that is easier to break into. Weekends are outdoors, sport-heavy and start early.
